Washed up

January 31, 2010

First off, thanks Alexie, Alvin and Long for asking me to write on this and I don’t even know why they would ask me. Back in the day, when I was writing a lot I viewed myself as a pretty good writer. Somewhere along the way I lost my way, my tone isn’t as strong as it used to be, plus I drop grammar like someone who is sleep deprived. I wasn’t sure what I was going to write about on here but then, five seconds ago, it hit me. I’m just gonna copy and paste my top five that I wrote around when they wrote theirs. Let’s modify it a little though so it fits the decade theme.

Top 5 games for me personally in this lifetime(cause the second one will have a different top 5 hopefully)
No order btw.

Chrono Trigger(DS version, ya what?): It’s the best. I cannot tell you how many times I have played through this game, and that I can really just pick it up at any time and start playing. It doesn’t matter that it is a long game. This is a fucking great game. Having one of the most epic battles of all time(Magus) and having one of the most emotional moments in a videogame of all time(Robo getting his ass handed to him) AND then having great combat/storyline.. can go on for awhile. Chrono Trigger just rules.

Metroid Prime(Trilogy): I’m putting this up here instead of Super Metroid because this did something Super Metroid didn’t, in a whole new perspective. I freaking loved Super Metroid, but this took it to that new level and it did it great. There’s only one negative with MP and if you wanna know ask Ryan Minnear, it’s the only problem we both had with it. This is the first fps style game to have jumping done in a manner where it feels like a 2d game. It’s the first fps style game to truly throw you into the character, from little things like reflections, to feet, to her grunts and motions. It has great combat, which feels extremely fast for an fps game, and the boss battles… man… wooo

Super Mario Galaxies: Mario 64 was great, I even liked Mario Sunshine.. but not as much as 64. Mario 1-3, also great.. Super Mario World, amazing too. This game though.. fuck. I had one slight problem with this game as I was playing through it, I felt it was a tad easy. Now, I took those words and choked on them for a long fucking time with one stage imparticular. It’s called Luigi’s purple coins. If you think you great at Mario games, or that you are good in games in general. This is one of those stages that imo is a test of everything you know. It’s not cheap, it’s not impossible, it’s tuned perfectly. And seriously once you get it, that shit is imbedded in your brain. Anyway besides that fucking amazing masterpiece of a level, the entire game is great. Miyamoto is a fucking artist from the future, cause some of these things you see, you really could not think up on your own and it’s just amazing seeing them in action.

WoW: Talked about this enough, I fucking hate putting this game up here, I fucking hate this game.

Ok, really though. WoW is a culmination of Blizzard’s ideas and it’s done right. These guys don’t release shitty games. They don’t. You can look at their older/quirkier titles and the only thing that might have hindered those games from being revered was that.. just a little too funky. WoW though, this game has grabbed the world by the ovaries/testicles and squeezes tight, it does not let go. No matter who the fuck you are, if you invest some time into this game, you will hit a point where something will happen that will make you think one of the following things:
I can fucking play this game forever, this shit rules.
I hate this.. I need to not play this game, but there’s so much fun shit to do.
If only I had more friends that played WoW with me, then I’d play all the fucking time.
I hate WoW, I’m gonna play this other game… but WoW is always there.. and it’s always improving upon itself so I could just stop by.
ok, fuck WoW, that’s all.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time: This is the first game I got in trouble for staying up late and playing. I remember exactly what I was doing too. It’s that part where you have to go down in the well, and those one zombie guys are there that grab you and own the shit out of you. This game did much like Metroid Prime did for Super Metroid, it took A Link to the Past and blew it up to all crazy fucking levels. The songs from this game will be stuck in my brain for too long, the end fight, forever. OoT just had it all and it looked so beautiful, it still looks beautiful. In fact, all of these games pull that off I think because these games have something that a lot of games don’t. It’s the artistry and imagination of the developers. Sure, you can tell me that Zelda/Mario and Metroid are just copied over and over again, but the worlds and the way they are expressed each time anew is fucking crazy good. I can’t remember the name of the big ass lake in Zelda, that thing was so pretty though.. when you just chill out there and watch the sun rise. Great stuff.

Alright then, notice the pathetic modifications I made? It’s because even though they had “remakes” of these games, they still hold up today. Now please, let’s get some better updates of those games this decade.
